How to use the Constancy  Checker in MyHeritage

You probably think that you do not have any obits errors in your family tree but unless you have run a check recently, you are wrong.  I run this check every few months and it typically finds about 100 errors that when pointed you, you will usually agree with their assessment.

Family Tree Maker has an very good  program for highlighting problems.

Some of the problems found in my data are:

15 Year old mother looked suspicious.
Getting married very young such as 13 or 14.
Child born after death of parent,   I had 3
Alive but too old.  This is usually a bogus listing.  If in Ancestry you said the person was dead but did not have a date, it sometimes shows up in this list.
Parent too young when having a child
Fact accruing after death.  Sometimes this is bogus.  It objects to Obits being after the death.  It is obviously a computer doing the checking.  I had a marriage after the death for example.
Parent too old when having a child.  I have a child who was born when his father was 66 that got flagged.  However the mother was solidly in the child bearing age range and, as the father was Former President Grover Cleveland, the documentation was solid.  Of course if it was in my direct line, getting a Y-DNA check might be a good idea.
Siblings too close in age.  I had 2
Died too young to be a spouse.  The one that died at the age of 2 is an obvious suspect.
Multiple marriages of the same couple.  You just need to clean up your web page.  It is often 2 listings for the same day.
Married name entered as the Maiden name.  This could be legitimate but not usually.
Multiple birth or death facts for the same person.  Again you usually just need to clean up your data a little.
Inconstancies in name spelling.  Sometimes intentional but good to check.  Typically it is father and son spelling their names differently.
Inconstancies in place name spelling.
Child older than parent

I keep an alphabetically arranged list of errors that are not so I do not have to verify then multiple time.

If Family Tree Maker is already the program you keep your primary data in it, then you can get to this check by clicking on "Family Tree" along the top of the page, then from the drop down menu select "More" then "Consistency Checker"

If you use Ancestry then the process is more complicated.

If you do not have a paid subscription to MyHeritage, then I believe it will only tell you about a few of your errors so it is best to cough up the money for a subscription.  A paid subscription is $89 for the 1st year then $129/year their after.  If you sign up for the free version, they will probably send you a special price sooner or later.  Its other benefits pretty much duplicate what Ancestry has.

How to run the Constancy checker starting out from Ancestry:

The basic idea is to download your genealogy data from Ancestry in the industry standard format called GECOM then upload it to MyHeritage.

Download the GEDCOM file from Ancestry:

From any page on Ancestry, click the Trees tab that is on the top ribbon and select a family tree you want to download and display it.
Then click the down arrow to the right of the tree you are using and select Tree Settings.
On the right side of the Tree Settings page, click Export tree (It is in green). You may have to scroll down to find “Export Tree”  It will take 30 seconds or so.   The file is quite small so it obviously does not contain things like your pictures.
When done the button will change to “a green Download your GEDCOM file.  Tap it to download the file and save it somewhere. The default is my download folder  The GEDCOM files will have the name of the tree you downloaded ending in .ged

Uploading it to MyHeritage:

Go to the MyHeritage web site, then (along the top center) Family Tree > Import GEDCOM (from the drop down menu) then browse for the file and upload it.  It will say at the top of the screen when it has successfully uploaded it. The note is next to a green dot.  It is quick.  They will e-mail you when they are done processing it. It should only take 30 minutes or so.  The e-mail will also list some of the errors with a link to the full list (assuming you have a subscription).

The email will list some inconsistencies but to see them all click in the orange bar at the bottom that says “View all ….”  .  You can also get to the list directly from MyHeritage.  Go to the drop down menu “Family Tree” then “More”  then “consistency checker”.

It defaults to the latest GEDCOM file you uploaded.  If you want to see an older one,  then in the upper right corner opposite "Tree Constancy checker in the left"  look for a dropdown menu with a title that relates to the name of your family tree. In the drop-down menu you will see the names of all the GEDCOM files you have uploaded.  If you just went with the default name each time you generated one, the names will all be the same.  The lowest one on the list is the most recent.  The number to the right is the number of names in the list.
