Conclusions:

1)    Some variation on Frisinger is 5 times as common in Austria than in Germany.

2)    Due to the larger population there is still almost twice as many in Germany

3)    The names are only about 20% as common in Switzerland as Germany

4)    The only about 40% as common in United States as Germany
5)  Ludwig is 7 generations back from me.  There is one more adult generation after me.  If each generation averaged 2.2 males, then there should be 2.2 to the 8th power with the last name from Ludwig.   2.28 = 549 people of the 912 in the United States.

6)  The spelling Ludwing used is most common in Switzerland as a fraction of other spellings of Frisinger but number using Ludwig’s spelling, “Freysinger”, in  Austria is bigger by a wide margin.  Also note that the Brazilian Freysinger that I have a link to was from Austria.

It is also worth noting alternate spellings for Ludwig, Ludwick (the spelling in the captains list) and Ludiwick; Friderich, and Fridrich,

Notes:
The populations for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are 2008 numbers.  The population for the USA is form 2009.
The occurrences of some variation of Frisingers for the above countries are from the phone books.  Since not everyone in the country is in the phone book, the percent named Frisingers as a fraction of the total population is low by probably a factor of 4 or so but probably fairly comparable between countries.

The United States numbers are start with phone book listings but modified with ratios of the data from Answers.com, because there are too many with the spelling “Frisinger”  for the phone book web sites to list them all.  The Ansers.com numbers are the number of times this surname appears in a sample database of 88.7 million names, representing one third of the 1997 population.

I checked Brazil and found only the spelling “Freisinger” which occurred only 10 times.  This is odd given the one person on Brazil that I have e-mail contact with uses “Freysinger”
